Here Debi speaks of her work in Hull…

I studied Contemporary Fine Art Practice at Hull School of Art, graduating in 2011. I completed the degree part-time over 5 years whilst working as support staff at Sirius Academy with ethnic children 11-16. In 2013 I resigned from the Academy to focus 100% on my art practice. Last year was a big turning point for me when I was approached by Artlink to commission a piece of work for Freedom Festival. They had seen earlier work I had produced at the PoP Gallery in Princes Quay, which was my Degree Show piece. This particular piece was selected to be shown at the International Print Biennale in Newcastle 2011.

I am currently focusing on applying for as many opportunities as possible within the realms of public art commissions and light festivals. I have also been selected for an internship at HSAD that will start any time now. Students and interns at HSAD have been invited by ABP to commission 6 permanent Public Artworks for the new Siemens Alexandra Dock Development which I am also working on.

The intention with my work is to create opportunities for audiences and participants to access art in new and innovative ways. It is my belief that galleries, museums and theatres are not environments that everyone feels comfortable in. It is therefore important to me that I create artworks that are fully accessible to a wider audience as possible outside of the constraints of these environments. I love to change a place that is usually overlooked into something beautiful with light and imagery, so the viewer is able to connect to the sublime moment.
